Are you looking for a job path or career that will hold you in good stead for many years to come? Have you considered CNA training as an option? There are tons of facilities across the country who offer this type of certification free of charge, and even promise you a position once you satisfactorily complete the training! Nursing related positions are expected to grow at a faster than average rate for several years according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, and now is a good time to get in on the ground floor.
Classroom Study
Your first stop to becoming a certified nurse’s assistant will be classroom training. The structure of this training will vary from one school or facility to the next but basically you will be taught about the importance of turning patients, how to take blood pressure, charting vital signs and much more. The number of hours in class will also vary.
Clinical Experience
As soon as possible facilities like to get you on the floor for your clinical experience. It is here that you will put into practice the many things you have learned in class. Depending on the rules at your training facility, these can be on floor exercises at the local hospital or within an assisted living facility. A nurse and or a certified aid will take around small groups as they perform their daily duties. This will give you hands on experience in dealing with patients of all types. Proper lifting and turning of patients as well as taking vital signs will be routine in clinical training. You may also receive instruction in giving showers, cleaning bedpans and much more!
Testing
When you have successfully completed your cna training you will be expected to go for state board certification. In other words, you have a final exam to take before you can legally be employed in this capacity within your state. Length of exam and the contents thereof will vary a bit from state to state, which is one reason certification will not always transfer. If you are considering moving to another geographical location, make sure your certification is good for the new state, boarder states try to work together in this respect.
Job Placement
Now that you have completed CNA, training and board certification you are ready to seek employment. In some cases, you may already have a job with the facility in which you trained. Some areas have completely eliminated in facility training, but of course this again depends on the area in which you reside.
The one thing you will find to be nearly universally true is the availability of positions. This is a growing field and someone is hiring CNA’s daily. You will definitely have a wide variety of options available to you including hospitals, doctor’s offices and elderly living facilities.
